About Charly.

As she gained experience in the music, Charly started a band (named Diamonds in the Rough, in honor of the Carter Family's sacred tune) and played throughout the Appalachian region. She came to be known as an engaging performer who connects easily with audiences through sincerity and a true passion for the music.

Today, Charly is back in Michigan, continuing to pursue that heartfelt passion. Her new music proudly honors the tradition she learned in Appalachia, while also being infused with her own unique songwriting style and originality. The result is an acoustic Americana blend that comes straight from the heart.

Charly was born and raised in rural Michigan. When it came time for her to pursue her musical journey, she chose to leave her home state for several years to locate to the mountains of southern Appalachia. That move enabled Charly to trace the true roots of America’s music and ingrain those roots into her musical foundation.

As she began to forge her own path as a singer/songwriter, Charly stayed true to those traditional roots.  Inspired by the influence of pioneers like the Carter Family, she came to believe it was authentic thoughts portrayed from the heart that mattered most in her music. That theory remains the foundation of Charly's songwriting. Her ability to paint those thoughts into words that the listener can relate to is her biggest strength.

"When she would sing and pick that mandolin, oh it would feel as if
the whole world was right."
~ Charly Markwart, "When She Would Sing"
